When All is Said

I have a number of recent quilts that I’d like to document here, but I’ll start with this one called Elevenses. This is part of the Deschutes Public Library Novel Idea Books to Quilts exhibit. It was supposed to be hung in the Bend Library, but due to the pandemic, the quilt show is now virtual. That’s actually great for you because I can refer you to a wonderful video put together by the library staff and you can see all the quilts in the exhibit:

This quilt was inspired by When All is Said by Anne Griffin. This book follows an elderly man as he toasts the five people in his life who have been closest to him. Maurice lives in Ireland and along the way we learn about his life from that of a young boy, through marriage and parenthood. My quilt represents his wife Sadie who had a love Earl Grey tea. Unfortunately, it was more expensive than the “bog standard” so she saved it for Elevenses.

Elevenses: a short break for light refreshments, usually with tea or coffee, taken about eleven o'clock in the morning.

This quilt was all hand appliqued and hand embroidered. It was then machine quilted. From conception to final stitch it went very quickly because I knew just what I wanted to do. I was able to work completely with stash fabric, threads and batting which is a current goal. I hope you’ll take a look at the other quilts in this show which are made with various techniques and inspiration from the book. Enjoy!
