Controlled Chaos was made for the Tiny Quilt Challenge for American Made Brand Fabric. The challenge was to make a tiny quilt using only AMB solids. It could be up to 15" square. Here's what I wrote about it in the entry:
Controlled Chaos is made with improvisational piecing on a tiny scale. The center medallion is made with small free form half square triangles and surrounded by improvisational logs that measure about 1/4" finished. The outer squares of the medallion barely contain the inner chaos of the improv triangles, leading to a fairly calm composition where the color of the solid fabrics can shine through. The inspiration to do improvisational piecing on a tiny scale comes from Chawne Kimber.
My time with Chawne at the retreat in August was quite inspirational actually. I hope to do more pieces on a tiny scale like this as I prepare for a joint show with my sister, Cheryl Chapman, in the Twigs Gallery in Sisters, OR next May.
The best news, which I can finally share, is that Controlled Chaos was chosen for the special exhibit for the Road to CA quilt show! AMB chose 40 quilts from 228 entries to be shown at Road to California. There is also a possibility of future special exhibits.

It all started with the center which was made the same way I did the one at the retreat. Lots of small triangles were just put together, then trimmed until a square was formed.
The back is really quite beautiful! Too bad it is now hidden away.
This is quilted simply by going in the ditch with matching thread in just a few places. I'm not brave enough to cover it with quilting that would really show.
