Two New Wallhangings

Well, color me surprised! I actually finished two wall quilts this month, one of which hadn’t really been started until recently. A couple of weeks ago I decided to clean my sewing room and I got the urge to work on these two projects as I found them while sorting fabric. The one on the right was started many years ago in a QuiltCon class. I started putting the blocks together and never really finished it, but this long narrow piece was ready to go and I thought I’d finish it as is for a narrow wall hanging. You may remember I used some of the other blocks in this style as rice bags last year.

The shapes were all hand stitched to the background fabric with the visible stitches. Those were done many years ago. When I decided to hand quilt it I just added quilting stitches around each shape. They can barely even be seen. It only took about three nights of stitching to quilt it and then I got the binding and sleeve on it a few days later and it’s already hanging on a basement wall outside Ryan’s bedroom. A very satisfying finish!

The second quilt hadn’t been started, but I did have various machine pieced fragments in my scrap box. I started with them and added more pieced blocks and the indigo moons to create this piece for our bedroom. I turned out exactly as I imagined and I’m thrilled to have it done so quickly after years of wanting to make something to go over the bed. I spent a day machine quilting all the matchstick lines just to get it done quickly and it’s in place over the bed. It goes quite well with the other two quilts in the room and I’m very pleased with it.

Strangely, neither of these has a name. I usually come up with a name which making my quilts and perhaps because it normally takes me longer to make them I have more time to come up with a name, but these are still un-named and might remain so forever unless I decided to enter them in a show.

While I was doing that organizing in the studio I also found another top from several years ago that I wanted to hand quilt and I am on a roll now. After not having much desire to quilt for the past few years it feels good to get into it again. I’ll post more about that one next time.
